The Curonian Sandbar spreads out along the Baltic Sea in western Lithuania with a total length of 98km (Lithuania area 52km, Kaliningrad area 46km) and is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Known as Kuršių nerija in Lithuanian and Curonian Spit in English, this sandbar is just a short boat ride from the port town of Klaipeda to Neringa.
About 30 km south of Neringa, there is a tourist spot called The Gray Dunes, which is a short walking course. Many tourists visiting the Curonian Sandbar, a World Heritage Site, are probably aiming for this place.
A little history was written on the information board at the entrance.
A canyon formed by strong winds, sand, grass and plants, and forest soil. Over 300 years ago there was a town here called Nagliai. To escape from strong winds and sandstorms, I moved many times to reach this place. It is said that the sand in the dunes moves 0.5 to 5m in a year, and after many years, I was forced to move again and moved to the town of Nida. Remnants of the town of Naglei can be seen in Pervalka and Preila.
Nida is a town of accommodation for visitors to the Curonian Spit and the Baltic Sea. The Curonian Sandbar also extends near the town of Nida, and you can enjoy a different impression from the Gray Dunes, such as a lighthouse, a bronze statue, and a sundial. On the south side of Nida, a basin called Death Valley spread out, and the scenery that seemed to appear in a movie spread out.
Baltic sea bathing beach. There was also a nude beach guide board a little away. Sand that makes a squeaking sound when you step on it and a calm sea. I'm desperate to swim and have fun, so I don't have many pictures, but even on the weekend when it's the most crowded, it's like this, so I think I can extend it. There was also a lot of amber for sale in town.
There is "The Hill of Witches" which is also introduced in "Witches Hill Walking Course" in the middle of Gray Dunes and Klaipeda. If you have time to spare, it's a good idea to stop by and feel the ethnic culture of western Lithuania. The legend surrounding the Curonian Sandbar is "The Female Giant, Neringa."
